NAVAL, Biliran – The celebration of Christmas and new year revelry in the province of Biliran was enjoyed by the Biliranons as there were no reported cases of firecrackers blasting that occurred during these occasions.

In an interview with Janice Curso, a nurse assigned at the emergency room (ER) of the Biliran Provincial Hospital (BPH) and a member of the team tasked to attend to patients injured in firecracker blasting, she informed that since the early part of December, on Christmas eve and during the New Year revelry, and based on records at the (ER), the hospital has no patients admitted for treatment due to firecrackers and other pyrotechnics blasting.

She said the BPH team was on duty round the clock to give immediate treatment to victims who will be brought to the hospital, if any. However, she said, as of this morning still there were no recorded victims of firecrackers blasting.

For his part, Dr. Alfonso Veneracion, Provincial Health Officer (PHO) of Biliran informed that the zero incidence of firecrackers blasting in the province was due to the massive information campaign initiated by the Biliran Provincial Health Office (BPHO) jointly with the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Biliran, the media, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and other concerned agencies.

He added that the information campaign done at the onset of the Christmas season has contributed a lot in educating the public to refrain from using firecrackers and other pyrotechnics to welcome the new year.

“At least the people in Biliran are aware of the perils of using firecrackers through the information campaign dubbed “Aksyo Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR). Anyway there are many ways of welcoming the new year without putting danger to the physical body or any part of it. We can produce noise by using old basins, cover of old kettles, drums and other noise-producing materials”, he said.

Dr.Veneracion thanked the personnel of the PHO in Biliran province who were involved in the APIR campaign. He likewise thanked the partner agencies for their active involvement in the campaign so that nobody will be hurt as every Biliranon welcomes the year 2013 . (PIA 8 Biliran)
