ALMERIA, Biliran – The Rotary Village Biliran Project was formally turned over to 50 household recepients in Sitio Ilihan, Brgy Poblacion Almera and Brgy Sangalang, Biliran on August 21, 2018. These two events were attended by project partners from various Rotary Clubs in the Philippines, Rotarian donors, Shelterbox, TESDA representatives, and respective LGU representatives. 2 livelihood centers, 1 for each site, were also inaugurated.

The Rotary Village was conceptualized by Rotary District 3860 Disaster Management Committee its project implementor, the Rotary Club of Biliran Island, to address the needs of a decent shelter facility of the victims whose homes were totally destroyed from the rampaging floods due to Typhoon Urduja.

“After the Rotary Club of Biliran Island assisted Shelterbox, a Rotary partner who provides emergency shelter needs through liveable tents, a plan was hatched to extend and provide a quicker way but a more permanent solution to the pressing shelter needs of the victims. Thus, Rotary Village Biliran was born.”, says Dindin Morillo, the Charter President of RC Biliran Island and its Project Coordinator of the Rotary Village in Biliran.

“One of the biggest factor in the successful implementation of this project is the cooperation of several partners, namely; Rotary Club and its donors, land-owners, LGUs of Almeria and Biliran, Shelterbox, Bileco, TESDA, and the beneficiaries who helped in building the houses themselves.”, say Noel Pla, the President-Elect of RC Biliran Island and the Project Coordinator of the the Rotary Village in Almeria.

With the help of the project partners and beneficiaries, the Rotary Village Biliran Project was successfully completed in record time – 3 month period for both Biliran and Almeria.

The Livelihood Center/Day Care Center donated by the Rotary District 3860 Rotary Foundation Committee and Rotary District 5320, was provided to extend avenue for residents to be trained in order to earn extra living while taking care of their children near their homes.

“The Rotary Village Biliran is a holistic approach to help calamity victims – providing emergency needs, a more permanent home and providing skills for livelihood. Our hope is to transform the lives of the beneficiaries to be resilient and self-reliant.” says Dindin Morillo and Noel Pla.

Rotarian PDDG Archie Francisco F. Gamboa of the PNP and his family of Rotarians attended the turn over ceremonies in both sites together with other dignitaries who graced the occasion.

“This noble project has been successfully implemented thanks to the generosity of the donors within the Rotary International organization.”, says Executive Director Troy Bumagat, of the District 3860 Disaster Management Committee. –  BiliranIsland.com
