NAVAL, Biliran – Its all systems go for the declaration of Biliran as a rabies-free province on October 11, 2012.
This was how Dr. Suzette V. Apura, provincial veterinarian, described the preparations for the declaration of the province as rabies-free after the meeting of the Provincial Rabies Prevention and Control Committee (PRPCC) on August 28, 2012 at the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian.
“The lined-up activities are just simple” Apura informed. She added that the activities on October 11, 2012 include a mass at the Naval Cathedral at 6:00 o’clock in the morning; motorcade around the town of Naval after the mass to be participated in by the member-agencies of the PRPCC; flying of white balloons with red colored messages; program at the Nipa Hut at the capitol compound; video presentation on best practices; ceremonial unveiling of “Rabies-Free Biliran” marker; and awarding of certificate of recognition to LGUs with effective and efficient implementation of rabies prevention and control program.
Top officials from the national and regional offices of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Health will come on the scheduled date of the declaration to formally declare Biliran as a rabies-free province, Apura said.
Biliran province will be the first province in Eastern Visayas region to be declared as a rabies-free province, Apura further said. The municipality of Limasawa in Southern Leyte will also be declared a rabies-free town on a separate schedule, she added.
It was learned that a DOH-DA evaluation team has evaluated Biliran province on April 18-19, 2012 to validate the data submitted for the declaration of the province of Biliran as a rabies-free province.
Data also from the provincial rabies prevention and control program coordinator in Biliran province revealed that there were no recorded cases of rabies from animal and human in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
