A young institution, just three years of being a university, the Naval State University (formerly Naval Institute of Technology) has slowly but surely proving itself as an educational institution to reckon with. Just after a year of its new university status it already gained recognition as a leading institution in the country being recognized as a model on institutional standard operation (ISO), the only one given such an award in Region 8. Other schools that got this recognition are the Bicol State University and another one in Mindanao.
NSU also received a presidential award in institutional quality assurance monitoring evaluation of the Commission on Higher Education. The NSU is an accredited pilot institution for quality management.
All these awards were earned under the leadership of Dr. Edith Genson, as university president.
Last October 2012 NSU boldly spearheaded and conducted the first international forum right in its premises. These were participated in by guest educational dignitaries like Honorable Fernando Zapico Teijeiro, Spanish Minister of Education who represented Ambassador of Spain to the Philippines; Dr. Lance Mosters (CEO of Global Educational Management Consultants A-S Group of Companies; Maricel de Castro, focal person, EIP World Health Organization and Dr. Clarita Joy Villapando, focal person of NSU International Linkages.
It was a big attempt to open the new university “to the world for brighter linkages and partnerships”, said Dr. Editha Sabonsolin Genson, NSU president.
That forum resulted in a strong tie up with the NSU to shipping companies and related industries of Spain, Greece and a host of other European countries for future deployment of NSU graduates of maritime, hotel and restaurant management graduates of the university.
Transforming Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) to a university status was filed in Congress by previous Biliran representative, but it was only during the incumbency of Atty. Glenn Chong as congressman of Biliran that this was realized via R.A. 9718. NSU celebrated its 3rd foundation year as a university last October 2012.
