CAIBIRAN, Biliran – The local government unit of this municipality was bestowed the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) recently.

Mayor Eulalio G. Maderazo said the CROWN Award was given during the national awarding program held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City last week.

Maderazo said Caibiran bested 170 municipalities, 6 cities and 6 provinces from Leyte and Samar.

The town also received a trophy and a P500,000 cash prize.

Maderazo told Manila Bulletin that Caibiran has been a CROWN awardee for three straight years.

He said he initiated the massive planting of vegetables in all the barangays to help address and curb the malnutrition problem.

Regular feeding program in public schools were also conducted.

Maderazo said by encouraging the people to plant more vegetables, they become self sufficient and are able to address their nutrition needs.

“I never expected that we will win in the CROWN award because our town is in the province and island and there are 171 municipalities, six cities and six provinces in Eastern Visayas (Leyte and Samar Region),” Maderazo told Manila Bulletin.

He said the NNC, an agency of the Department of Health (DOH) launched the CROWN Award for the municipalities, cities, and/or provinces that excelled in nutrition program management and are bestowed the Green Banner Award in their respective regions for three consecutive years.
