NAVAL, Biliran – Thirty-six foreign and local doctors have offered free surgical operation services in Biliran province from September 2 to 5.
According to Diana Bernardes-Chawdhury, supervising administrative officer of the Biliran Provincial Hospital (BPH), the 36 foreign and local medical doctors came from the National University Hospital of Singapore, Chicago, Kansas and Texas in the United States of America, Germany and from Cebu Doctors Hospital in Cebu City.
Chawdhury informed that the free surgical operation is brought to Biliran province by Operation Share international in coordination with the provincial government of Biliran through Biliran Governor Gerardo J. Espina, Jr. , office of Congressman Rogelio J. Espina of the Lone District of Biliran and in cooperation with Covidien and RBGM company.
It was learned that Operation Share International is a non-profit organization that specializes in free medical care, primarily in the Southeast Asian region.
Surgical operations for myoma, cleft palate, ovarian cyst, thyroid and hernia were performed by the 71-team health personnel of the Operation Share International, Chawdhury informed.
She added that there were 34 minor surgeries and 44 major surgeries performed by the foreign and local doctors in the entire duration of the free surgical mission.
Eliseo Vegenia of Julita ,Biliran said that the free surgical operation saved him at least P50,000. His wife, Renea , a public elementary school teacher, is scheduled for operation next month in in a private hospital in Tacloban City, but because of the four day surgical mission, she availed it for free.
‘We grabbed the opportunity of the free surgical operation” he added, after hearing from a local radio station about the health mission.
His wife underwent an operation of a cyst in the lower portion of the right ear on day two of the four-day free surgical mission. (PIA 8 Biliran)
