Tacloban City— A newly elected Punong Barangay in the Municipality of Dagami, Leyte, was killed when the single motorcycle she was boarding with her husband was bumped by a tricycle about 11:20 in the morning on Friday, November 10, along Bagacay-Maharlika Highway, Barangay 93 here.
Police identified the victim as Niña Danica Bayona, 28, a married, newly elected barangay chairwoman and a resident of Sampaguita, Dagami Leyte. While the driver of the tricycle that bumped the motorcycle driver by the police and his wife were identified as Bernie Gacoscosim, a 32-year-old single businessman and a resident of Brgy. 106, here, who was driving without a driver’s license during the incident.
The injured, on the other hand, were identified as Police Corporal Leomer Bayona, 30, married, a PNP member assigned to the Mobile Patrol Unit, TCPO, and a resident of Brgy. Sampaguita, Dagami Leyte, and a certain Intoy Sumagdon, 34, single, cook at a catering service and a resident of GMA, 106, Sto. Niño here.
Initial investigation conducted by the local police disclosed that Corporal Bayona was traversing along Bagacay-Maharlika Highway from Diit-Maharlika, heading in the general direction of Cabalawan-Maharlika, on board his driven motorcycle, a Yamaha Sniper 155 bearing plate no. 357HMG, with his wife, the newly elected Punong Barangay, as the back rider. On the other hand, the police said that Gacoscosim just finished refueling gas at Sea Oil-Bagacay Branch Gasoline Station on board his driven tricycle with a Haojue 125 motorcycle and sidecar with Intoy Sumagdon as the back rider and was preparing to merge with the traffic of Bagacay-Maharlika going to Nula-Tula-Maharlika Highway. The police added that upon reaching a certain portion of the roadway in the place of occurrence, the tricycle driven by Gacoscosim allegedly bumped into the single motorcycle boarded by the Punong Barangay and driven by her police husband.
The collision, according to investigators, resulted in both the newly elected Punong Barangay and Sumagdon being thrown away from their respective boarding vehicles. Upon the arrival of the responding unit, Corporal Bayona and Sumagdon were immediately transported to EVMC for immediate medical attention. However, the newly elected Punong Barangay was found lying prostrate on the ground at the side of the road, covered by a covering bag, with no signs of life.
The tricycle driver, Gacoscosim, who only incurred light scratches, is now under the custody of PS2 of the Tacloban City Police Office (TCPO) for proper disposition.
The station is now preparing a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injury against Gacoscosim for filing through inquest proceedings.
